On a computer you don’t need the TikTok app at all. Watch on tiktok.com, copy the address, paste it into Tik4DL, and the MP4 lands in your Downloads folder. No software to install, which also means nothing that can come bundled with adware.
Step by step
- Open the video on tiktok.com. Click it so it opens on its own page. The address should look like
tiktok.com/@username/video/1234…. - Copy the address. Click the address bar and press Ctrl + C (Windows/Linux) or ⌘ + C (Mac). You can also use the video’s Share button → Copy link.
- Paste into Tik4DL. Open tik4dl.com, click the box and press Ctrl/⌘ + V. Fetching starts automatically.
- Download. Click Download HD. The file goes to your Downloads folder.
Even faster: the bookmarklet
Our bookmarklet turns step 2 and 3 into one click.
- Open the App page and choose the Windows & Mac tab.
- Drag the Tik4DL it button onto your bookmarks bar. (Press Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + B if the bar is hidden.)
- While watching any TikTok on tiktok.com, click the bookmark. Tik4DL opens with that video ready to download.
Using Chrome or Edge? You can also install Tik4DL as a desktop app from the same page. It gets its own window and taskbar or Dock icon.
Where are the files saved?
| System | Default folder | Shortcut to downloads |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | This PC → Downloads | Ctrl + J in the browser |
| macOS | Finder → Downloads | ⌘ + Option + L |
| Chromebook | Files → Downloads | Ctrl + J |
Common desktop issues
Safari on Mac plays the video instead of saving it
Right-click (or Control-click) the download button and choose Download Linked File.
The file won’t play in Windows Media Player
TikTok uses modern codecs that some older players handle poorly. Use the Media Player or Photos app on Windows 10/11, or the free VLC player.
I want to edit the video
The MP4 works in every common editor: Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut desktop and iMovie. TikToks are vertical (9:16), so start a vertical project to avoid black bars.

Rename files automatically, in bulk
Tik4DL names files like tik4dl_username_7349….mp4, which keeps them sorted by creator. If you prefer your own names:
- Windows: select several files in File Explorer, press F2, type a name and press Enter. Windows numbers them for you.
- Mac: select the files in Finder, right-click → Rename, and choose Format to add a number or date.
Ask where to save each download
To sort downloads into folders as you go, turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading in Chrome (Settings → Downloads), Edge (Settings → Downloads) or Firefox (Settings → General → Files and Applications). Safari has the option under Settings → General → File download location.
Converting or compressing the video
TikTok files are already standard MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio), so they play and import almost everywhere. If you need a smaller file for email, the free tool HandBrake can reduce the size with its “Fast 720p30” preset. To turn a clip into a GIF, most video editors have a GIF export, or you can use a trusted online converter for short clips.
Using the videos in presentations
Downloaded TikToks drop straight into PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides (via Google Drive). Because they are vertical, place them in a portrait frame or next to text instead of stretching them across a widescreen slide. Credit the creator on the slide if the presentation is shared.
Common questions
Do I need to install software?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Desktop “TikTok downloader” programs are rarely necessary and sometimes bundle adware.
Does it work on Linux and Chromebook?
Yes. Any modern browser on any system works the same way.
Copy the link, paste it into Tik4DL, pick your format.
