When you paste a link into Tik4DL you often get two clean versions of the same video: Download HD and Download MP4. They look similar on a phone, but they are different files. This guide explains what changes between them, why quality varies from video to video, and how to avoid losing quality afterwards.
HD vs MP4 in one table
| Download HD | Download MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical resolution | 1080×1920 | 720×1280 |
| Typical size (60 s) | 10–25 MB | 4–10 MB |
| Watermark | No | No |
| Best for | Keeping, editing, big screens | Messaging, saving storage |
Both files contain the same footage and the same sound. HD simply keeps more detail, which you notice in text, faces, fast motion and on larger screens.
Why some videos have no HD button
TikTok only creates an HD rendition when the upload is good enough. You will see just one MP4 when:
- the creator uploaded a 720p or smaller video, for example a screen recording or an old clip;
- the video was edited in an app that exported at low resolution;
- the post is older, from before HD processing was common;
- TikTok has not finished processing a brand-new upload. Try again in a few minutes.
No downloader can add detail that was never uploaded. Tools that promise “4K TikTok downloads” only upscale the file, which makes it bigger without making it sharper.
Resolution, bitrate and codec in plain words
- Resolution is the number of pixels, for example 1080×1920. More pixels means a sharper picture.
- Bitrate is how much data is used per second. Two 1080p files can look very different if one has a much lower bitrate. HD files from TikTok have a higher bitrate, which is why they are bigger.
- Codec is how the video is compressed. Tik4DL delivers H.264 MP4 whenever possible, because it plays on every phone, computer, TV and editing app.
Keeping the quality when you re-share
Most quality loss happens after the download, when a file is compressed again:
- WhatsApp compresses videos by default. Send the file as a Document to keep the original quality.
- Telegram keeps quality if you send it as a file instead of a video.
- Instagram, YouTube and Facebook always re-encode uploads. Start from the HD file so there is more detail to keep.
- Editing apps: export at the same resolution and frame rate as the source (usually 1080×1920 at 30 fps).
Saving storage without losing too much
If space matters, download the MP4 version, or keep the HD file and compress it yourself with a tool like HandBrake (preset Fast 1080p30 or Fast 720p30). Compressing once from HD looks better than downloading the smaller version and compressing it again.
Common questions
Is the watermarked version lower quality?
Usually it is the same resolution as the standard MP4, with the logo added and a short end card. The HD clean file is normally the best version available.
Why does my video look worse on my computer than on my phone?
A small phone screen hides compression; a large monitor shows it. Use the HD download for anything you will watch on a big screen.
What about audio quality?
Audio is the same in all versions, typically AAC at 128 kbps. See TikTok to MP3 if you only need the sound.
